Ways of Bridging the Gender Divide Among Women
If you are more interested into the societal relations, you may have noted, that gender socialization tends to start at a very early age. One would need to dig deep and learn that girls tend to be socialized into toy cars while girls are socialized into Barbie preparing them to take care of their children when they grow up. As they grow up, they tend to be shaped by what they should be doing, the field they should have interest in as well as industries they should venture in. In the same manner, the socialization of boys and girls when it comes to recreation also tends to be very different. here, one would also need to note that women are socialized to wear skirts, want to be housewives, nurses, as well as put on bright pastel colors while men tend to be socialized to be risk takers, providers for the family and should also not show emotions. Even while the society may be preaching that there is progress towards bridging these gaps, there are still gaps women should join and work together towards crossing the gap.
One would have easy time empowering other women where he or she has taken time to empower herself. Women should also encourage each other to participate in the male-dominated industry whether working or even just hobbies.
Having been socialized all the way from when one is young, many women do not have an idea that they have been made to believe that they should be affiliated to certain norms, tastes, and preferences. Women have also been socialized to speak less when in the company of men. In the same line, some women have been compelled to give birth to children even when they have other plans and have even more when they feel they do not want more children.
One would also need to discover more about changing these subordinating norms but would need to make sure that he or she first begins with herself. It would be hypocritical where one went preaching things she does not practice. If your memory serves you right, you may have been told never to play football as it is meant for men. You may have been told that trousers are for boys and that you should play with Barbie. These are some of the avenues that were used to socialize you into believing that some tasks, behaviors, and roles are meant for women. It is basic that children tend to be born without a gender but the society tends to force it into them.
